Carpentry courses provide information related to the building of wooden structures, enabling students to gain an understanding of wood grades and construction methods and to learn skills such as laying sills and joists; erecting sills and rafters; applying sheathing, siding, and shingles; setting doorjambs; and hanging doors. Carpentry courses may teach skills for rough construction, finish work, or both. Students learn to read blueprints, draft, use tools and machines properly and safely, erect buildings from construction lumber, perform finish work inside of buildings, and do limited cabinetwork. Carpentry courses may also include career exploration, good work habits, and employability skills. For more information on courses offered and standards click here:

Work-based Learning Opportunities
Students are encouraged to complete WBL experiences with construction and maintenance businesses in Dillon and surrounding counties. These experiences give the students an opportunity to "test drive" a career. This empowers the student with the knowledge that they love the career or that it may not be for them, allowing them to change course to a career that best fit them. Either way the student will save time and money. If they love it the student will already have experience, contacts, references for the industry allowing them to start earning money sooner and likely at a higher than entry level. If they don't love, it the student will not waist any more time pursuing a career that is not a good fit for them.
